Your Stain

2015

Performance / Installation at Fleming House, Glasgow

Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes

My body, cleaning devices, white jogging bottoms, white top

I cleaned the gallery space with my body during the opening of our third year exhibition. I wore a handsewn apron made of sponge cloths and a white costume with cleaning devices sewn on to it.

The work was a comment on who is allowed into the art world, a place which very often seems to be exclusively for the educated middle and upper classes. I used my own family background of four generations of female cleaners as a starting point for the work. The work was inevitably humorous, but created discomfort amongst the audience and myself. Some students threw their litter and poured their drinks on the floor because they knew I had to clean it up.
